Coundon Court's latest team received their brand new kits this week...over four thousand miles away!
50 kits were sent from the club to Angorom, in the north-east of Uganda - via Coventry-based charity Global Care - who are in the process of building the Ron Newby Memorial Primary School in the town.
Recent reports suggest that 25% of the Ugandan population lives in chronic poverty, and with the country still recovering from civil war in the 1980's, this has left Uganda as one of the poorest countries in the world.
Global Care's Paul Rowell talked about the special moment he passed the kit onto the youngsters, he said: ''It was one of those memorable moments, the chair of the PTA asked the football team to come forward and there was the normal sized eleven and substitute group of boys, I then produced the football kit and all of a sudden the football team became forty plus strong!''
Under 14's boys manager and club spokesman; Barry Morris, was also full of praise for the scheme, he added: ''Most clubs must have old kit sitting around doing nothing, we wanted to do something worthwhile with ours, and with just a little effort I think we have achieved that. Our thanks to Global Care for making it possible.''
The school is named after Global Care founder Ron Newby, who set up the charity in 1983. |
