Second-half goals by Haig and Tom were enough to condemn Alvis Colts to defeat, and send Coundon Court into the third round of the John Bryan Coventry Minor League Under 14 Cup.
Off the back of a thumping victory over Leamington Brakes Colts in the previous round, B League Alvis fought valiantly in the first-half, but the quality of the hosts shone through in the second as Haig’s deflected effort forced a lead. Coundon pushed forward looking for a second - and after missing a host of chances – Tom chipped the goalkeeper with just two minutes remaining to seal the win.
After a slow start with very little to choose between the teams, Coundon burst into life on 11 minutes as Josh met a loose ball with a thumping half-volley which was tipped away for a corner by the goalkeeper. The visitors responded in a positive fashion, as the #7 and the #10 were both sent clear on the right-wing, but Coundon dealt well with both and managed to clear away. The latter then forced Damon into his first save on 18 minutes as he broke free on the right, but the stopper was equal to a timid effort at his near post.
The match was starting to grow as a spectacle, and a minute later Sam sent an ambitious left-footed drive just over the bar from the edge of the box. In a similar fashion, the Alvis #7 cut inside on 26 minutes and hammered a shot which cleared Damon’s goal.
Undoubtedly the best chance of the half went begging two minutes later though, as Haig’s inviting corner found Daniel, who glanced a header just wide of the left post. Coundon went close again just a minute before the half-time break, as George’s deep corner from the left picked out Sam, but he directed his volley just wide of goal.
The hosts flew out of the traps in the second-half and very nearly netted an opener on 39 minutes, as substitute Ayo rolled the ball back for Owen, who rattled the post with a thunderous, low drive. Haig went one better on 48 minutes, as he met Ayo’s cut back from the right-wing with a first-time effort that deflected in via the body of an Alvis defender, to give Coundon the lead.
Despite the goal advantage, Coundon took their foot off the gas and let Alvis back into the game, yet were still looking threatening on the break. Sam had a strike easily saved from distance, before Daniel picked out Tom with a sublime ball on 53 minutes; he ran clear on the left but rolled the ball just wide of the right post.
The hosts then had two chances in two minutes, as Sam’s free-kick was comfortably held and then Ayo raced clear on the right flank but was wasteful with his finish as he blazed over the bar from close range.
Coundon Court were still looking much more dangerous in attack, but Alvis were pushing forward in numbers late on. The #8 sent a warning to the home team when he broke clear of the Coundon midfield on 63 minutes, before lashing a low strike that was well held by Damon.
The match was finally settled five minutes later though, as a poor back pass was seized upon by Tom, who brilliantly looped over the ‘keeper to confirm victory. Owen had a chance to put gloss on the victory when he controlled Haig’s low shot in injury-time, but he disappointingly slammed his strike well wide of the right post.
